Construction of 2.3km of 450 dia sewer, and the demolition of existing Burghill Sewer Treatment
Works (STW).
This project involved the laying of a new 450dia sewer from Burghill STW to three Elms Road, Hereford. The sewer was laid using an open-cut method, with the pipe material being plastic (Polypipe ? Rigisewer). The land in which the sewer was laid was predominantly agricultural.
During the contract a section of sewer (approx 200m) was chosen by the Concrete Pipeline Systems Association (CPSA) as a test site for a new type of extra strength concrete pipe. The pipes having extra reinforcement could be laid on bedding, but surrounded with excavated material. The test proved very successful with the saving made due to the decrease in aggregates used being very significant.
A small section of works across the Roman Road at the North end of the site was laid using an Auger Bore Method. This work was conducted by Specialist Tunnelling Contractor – B&W Tunnelling. Once the main had been laid and connections made at the southern and northern ends of the site, the existing Burghill STW was demolished and the ground area reinstated to an open field.
